The artistic approach

Yann Delcambre photographs burners, people who practise the arts of Fire. He seeks to reveal a symbiosis between the person and the flame: the person brings Fire into being; the flame gives them its light. Almost all the photographs were made without any additional light.

“Fire is like a person: it has a character of its own, makes its own choices and asserts its presence.”

Yann Delcambre

Interview topics

  • Portraying Fire as a person: how fifteen years among burners have shaped his vision.

  • Photographing by flame alone: capturing the nuances of a dazzling flame alongside a body that can disappear into shadow.

  • Creating a self-published photobook: nearly three years of conception, moving from screen to paper and preserving the depth of the blacks.

  • Sharing the practice: the history of fire photography, its technical and safety challenges, and his two-day masterclasses in Lille and the Paris region.

Biography

Yann Delcambre has photographed the arts of Fire for around fifteen years. His first images emerged from regular gatherings of practitioners at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. He continued this work in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, at large gatherings and practice spaces alike. His familiarity with the gestures, props and people, together with the trust built over the years, shapes his photographic vision.

He shares his approach through two-day masterclasses, with five photographers per session. He has received four prizes at the International Photography Awards, in the Non-Professional division, including a first prize in 2023, and was honoured in two 35AWARDS themed competitions in 2025. FIRE PHOTOGRAPHY is his first book.
